Taking care of a new baby is a wondrous and thrilling experience. However, a lack of sleep is also part of having a new baby and new parents notoriously get very little sleep, if any at all. But, there are ways new parents can still sleep, at least enough to function. Of course, with a baby you will never get an over abundance of sleep, but these tips will help you at least get enough sleep to keep your sanity.
Try taking turns.
Very often, both parents awaken when the baby cries, even if only one parent gets up to tend to the baby’s needs. It is not unheard of that both parents get up during the first couple of months. Neither of them will get any sleep this way. The best plan is for mom and dad to make a plan of who will get up when to comfort the crying baby. Generally, taking turns is really the best option and will help everyone get just a little more sleep.
Get some sleep when baby naps.
There is little reason for you to remain awake when baby sleeps. Sleeping whenever baby does allows you to remain sane. No matter if baby sleeps in the morning, afternoon or evening, it is good for you to get some needed rest.
Take all the help you can get.
Many people, both family and friends, are willing to help you whenever a new baby comes along. So, when you really need to get some sleep just accept some of the help that is being offered. Letting your mom take care of the baby for a little while can make a wonderful difference and allow you to get some needed rest.
Keep Baby in Nursery.
Baby should sleep in the nursery instead than with mom and dad. While it is easy to get into the habit of letting baby sleep with the parents, it is not good to do so. It is much better to let baby sleep in the crib in the nursery. Then, when the baby cries one parent can easily go attend to the baby without disturbing the other parent. This allows a little more sleep for new parents.
Feed Baby Before You Sleep
Even if baby is asleep, wake him up to feed him before you go to bed. Sometimes babies wake up at night simply because they are hungry, so if you take the time to feed them before you go to bed, they might stay asleep until early morning, giving you a good 6 or 7 hours. This will definitely help you get more sleep, even if getting as much rest as you wish is not yet in the cards.
